Name:

    SMTPSaveImportErrors

Syntax

    SMTPSaveImportErrors=Value

Applies to:

    Workstations

Add-on:

    First Release:

      5.0

    Obsolete since:

      Category:

        Mail, SMTP

      Default:

        0

      UI equivalent:

        None

      Description:
Specifies whether mail message import errors are recorded, as follows:

0 - No messages are recorded.

1 - When an arriving message fails to be written as a note in MAIL.BOX, Domino writes the data stream to a temporary directory, and logs the name of the file.

2 - All arriving messages have their data streams written to the temporary directory.

3 - Save all inbound messages during import, delete all messages that have been successfully received and written into MAIL.BOX. Only messages that fail to be imported into MAIL.BOX will be saved to a temp file. Because the temporary file is deleted after each successful conversion, the disk space and maintenance required for the temporary files is significantly less than with option 2. The new option is especially useful if troubleshooting a crash scenario where the time between crashes spans days or weeks.

Note: This feature can use a great deal of disk space since the saved messages continue to accumulate until you delete them. Also, the content of the messages are accessible to anyone with the privileges to read files in the temporary directory.

One method of finding the TMP file for observation is to do the following: (1) Add the parameter LOG_MAILROUTING=40 to NOTES.INI, and (2) search via the sender's or recipient's address as displayed in LOG.NSF.

You may find that setting additional debug variables will help with identifying the sender or the recipient of the messages. Otherwise, you will need to match up the TMP file name (found in the Miscellaneous Events view of the LOG.NSF) with the corresponding message that was received, found in the Mail Routing events by time stamp.

Increase the mail routing logging level from "Normal" to "Verbose" (in the Server Configuration document, on the Router/SMTP, Advanced, Controls tabs, "Logging level" field). Also, set a Debug_Outfile as well. This will allow you to easily match the message received to the recipient or the sender.

Domino Configuration Tuner: This setting is included in the DCT catalog of best practices as of Domino 8.5

The following example shows the information that would be found in a debug_outfile with the additional logging enabled:

      mm/dd/yyyy 01:46:24 PM SMTP Server: 9.95.xx.xx connected
      mm/dd/yyyy 01:46:24 PM SMTP Server: Originator: <Ted_User@mail1.lotus.com>
